prison records

Please can anyone tell me if prison records are available for the Victorian period, and if so how to go about finding them.  I'm am trying to find out why my g g grandmother was in Exeter prison in 1881 - as was her daughter.

Hi

You could try emailing Exeter Record office and asking if they have Quarter Session records covering the period of 1881 and you would like to know if they have been indexed, include the names of the ancestors you are interested in and state you are trying to find out what crime they comitted through the QS records.

I am sure they will be able to assist you as to whether the records have survived, if they have been indexed and how you can access them. (If they are indexed it will be much easier to find the people you are looking for, they may even have a quick look for you if you are lucky - so include the names)

 this link takes you to the webpage, I have had a look and it does say they have prison records and court records but doesn't cover the dates.
