can anyone help?
« on: Wednesday 15 March 06 14:07 GMT (UK) »
Hello all
thanks to kindly folk on the Liverpool forum I am now looking to Cheshire.
This is what I have,
my g.g. grandfather's marriage certificate came today his father is a Joseph Woodward and from the census in Liverpool this gentleman 's place of birth was Thornton Cheshire also in the 1851 census he was aged 54.
Would anyone have anyinformation therefore on a Joseph Woodward born abt 1796/7 in Thornton Cheshire he was a house painter. I know he married in Liverpool.
Any help would be brilliant or pointers as where to look next.
many thanks
Norma

Hi

There are 3 Thornton at least in Cheshire, the one thats probably best for "Liverpool " connections is Thornton Hough at Neston on the Wirral http://www.fhsc.org.uk/genuki/chs/thorntonhough.html

From the Cheshire Parish records website http://www.csc.liv.ac.uk/~cprdb/

There is this record, baptized at Neston 14/9/1796 Joseph Woodward also on the 2/3/1794 Mary Woodward father John mother Theresa. All residents of Liverpool at the time of baptism.

From the Family search site http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/

31 March 1793 at Saint Nicholas Liverpool a marriage for a John Woodward and Teresa Walker.

Whether there is a connection or not can't be sure but looks a possible.

3 Thorntons dear me, I must say that the Joseph Woodward you have  there for 1796 does sound promising, what would be the best route to confirm this.
many thanks for helping me.
best wishes

Hi Norma  :)

Very difficult with some families once you get back before civil records, it some times means a visit to the records office(s) to go through the parish records.
I have a long list of my people to search out when I get to the other side, well two lists actually, all depends whether I go up or down, as I intend to hang around for while yet I have listed a few suggestions that I usually try on the internet.

I was going to suggest Genes Reunited, I checked and there is a lady named Norma doing the same research as you, then I realised its probably you, ( not to bright this morning, sorry)

Try Google, "Woodward family history" try UK sites only first, otherwise you will get bombarded with US ones

Guild of One name studies
http://www.one-name.org/cgibin/index.cgi?find=W

It may be an idea to try looking for and connecting family names, Theresa Woodward is not a common name and I would expect that John and Theresa's children may continue the name, I would search for another Theresa Woodward in or around Liverpool, search census and BMD records and see where it leads you.

If you have no success get back to me and I will add your names to my list  :D

good luck
