How many certificates have you ordered?
« on: Thursday 26 May 05 21:37 BST (UK) »
I thought it might be interesting to estimate how much Rootschatters are spending on certificates from the GRO or local records offices.  If we get enough voters for this poll, it should be possible to estimate approximately how many certificates have been ordered in total and multiply this number by ₤7.

I'm sure that professional statisticians will tell me that this is a decidely dodgy way to do such a calculation but I'll be interested to see what number we come up with!

Hi Tabitha,

Are you the one person so far that's ticked the "More than 50" option?  Should I have included a "More than 100" option for you and Paul E? ;)

Regards,

Allan

I'm cheap - I get my sister and sister in law to buy the certificates - it must be around 20 or so.

I'd been trying to limit the certificates I bought to direct ancestors or close rellies who were likely to provide info I needed.  Then I consoled myself for not being able to get to the RootsChat meet with a whole pile (cheaper than flight + hotel!), and to my delight the witness on a "non-necessary" death cert led me to the right parents for my gggrandmother....  A real break when you're lookig for Joneses - but there aren't many called Constantina Mary!  (Unfortunately ggggranddad is John, but never mind...)

Very few, close relatives only, I found it quicker and sometimes more accurate to visit the Register Office and copy the entries myself and eminently more satisfying.
I do however purchase Parish Registers for the parishes of interest so in practice have thousands of marriage certificates.

I've bought about 7 but add that to cost of registering with Gene united, 1837 on line and the 1901 look ups it gets quite expensive.

I'm lucky, all my ancestors have come from Aberdeenshire so

far, so the cost of copy certificates is minimal

Aberdeenshire : Anderson + Baxter + Bruce + Dickson + Emslie + Hendry + Hunter + Laing + Lawson + Maitland + Reid + Robb + Walker + Watt + Williams

Banffshire/Morayshire : Farquharson + Gordon + Grant + Lamb + Lawson + Stewart/Stuart

I have so many that I've lost count!! My Mum was adopted, so no relies on that line & my Dad was an only child. I've gone back 6 generations on Dad's side & followed all their decendants.
Will have a count up later....just to compare notes.
