And what about flowers for the family history widow formerly known as the wife? :)

By the way, Al - BELATED happy birthday!

cheers

Paul

PS And, for the record, I'm only in the 20's as far as certs ordered  (I only use them when I stall with the censuses)!

But if you don't get certificates you can easily follow the wrong female side

For the GRO I'm fairly modest just 10 certs.  I got access to records for Somerset which meant I didn't need the certs. So the Eng &  Wal certs are the cheapest part of the hobby.

The rest however adds up!

Scotlandspeople is my main expense and this is the equivalent in Scotland of the GRO certs.

Shoot I hope my family don't see this  :-[

787 searches @ 20p = £157.40
327 images viewed @ £1 = £327

3 visits to the GROS because I was spending too much on the website @ £17.50 = £52.50 but got more than 200 certs worth of info.

2 x 3-day visits to London ~ £400 flights and accom

3 x 1=day visits to Carlisle RO ~ £80 petrol

6 x Dumfieshire grave hunts  ~ £210 petrol

2 CD census £70

20 name index pamphlets £45

Books ~ £100

15 wills ~ £50

Jeez I'm stopping now and I think I'll start pilfering stationery from work JOKE!

This is just the biggies over the last 18 months.  If I can spend this in 18 months I dread to think how it will add up  :o

I'm depressed now.

I was away over the weekend so I've only just seen the new posts in this thread.

We've now had a total of 67 votes and using the same calculation as I did on Friday (see my post in this thread on 27th May), the total number of certificates purchased by 67 Rootschatters comes to 1819 which remarkably still gives the same average of 27 certificates each (27.1 today versus 26.7 from Friday's numbers).

The total number of registered Rootchatters has gone up over the weekend by 112 from 15,860 to 15,972 so by my calculations we've spent:

15,972 x 27 x £7 = £3,018,708 on certificates

I was very interested to see Boongie Pam's estimate of what she's spent in total on her research - almost £1500!  If this is a typical figure rather than the £189 I calculated for 27 certificates each then we've spent more than 20 million pounds between us on our research!

I totally agree with Nessie that whatever we've spent, it's well worth the cost :)

Thnaks to everyone for voting.

Best Regards,

Allan

ps Thanks for your birthday wishes.  My two year old daughter's birthday was also on Friday so as you can imagine mine rather took a back seat :)

Hi Again,

This poll's been running for just over a week now and we've had 74 votes.  Using the same calculation as in my previous summaries, I estimate that these 74 Rootschatters have bought 2072 certificates between them which makes the average 28 per person.  The new estimate of the total spent on certificates is:

16,117 Rootschatters x 28 certificates x £7 = £3,158,932

So still 3 million quid give or take so I'm going to lock the voting now and let this thread quietly die before you all get bored (if you're not already ;) )

I think there are couple of things worth remembering from this thread:

- If anyone ever tells you that there is not enough interest in genealogy to justify xxx  - just quote the 3 million quid figure!
- The number of Rootschatters has increased by 257 - nearly 2% in just one week

Thanks to everybody who voted.

Regards,

Allan

I'd love to see some figures for the estimated gross expenditure on genealogy.

We'd have to factor in subscriptions to magazines, too!

I'd be stunned if the total expendituire in the UK didn't easily exceed £100 million.

Any way we can find the annual income of the GRO?  I just Googled but didn;t find anything.

cheers

Paul
