I'd love to see some figures for the estimated gross expenditure on genealogy.

We'd have to factor in subscriptions to magazines, too!

I'd be stunned if the total expendituire in the UK didn't easily exceed £100 million.

Any way we can find the annual income of the GRO?  I just Googled but didn;t find anything.

cheers

Paul

Using the "Boongie Pam factor" in my calculations on Monday I got to a figure of 20 million quid - and that's just for Rootscahtters.  I'm sure there are those who haven't (yet) seen the light on the best genealogy site on the web who are also spending money on this hobby as well as "professionals" who charge for lookups/research :o  :) .

I agree with you Paul that £100 million is not an unreasonable figure - I believe that politicians often quote statistics at us using much more shakey data than my highy scientific poll ;D

Amazing the figures produced - I have ordered about 50 certs so far I guess (this poll is closed then?)
 - makes one wonder what proportion thence use ancestry.com and what their income (and expenditure) is really, which could be ................anything.

I find it interesting that Pam in Scotland has probably spent as much, or more, on certificates than those in England, yet SP images are only 1 pound compared to 7 in England, and various amounts in my Australia ranging from 6 to 16 pounds ($15 to $40).

I think I am trying to prove that we would spend just as much if the price is lower and the access convenient, so organisations charging larger amounts of money and not having online access are probably doing themselves a disservice.  I personally have 5 times as many certificates from Scotland than from anywhere else, despite them being a small part of my ancestors.

I refuse to count up how many certificates I've bought and how much it has cost me - I'd probably stop straight away if I knew.  Best just to go on in blissful ignorance!

Mine have been primarily from ScotlandsPeople, then Victoria ($A17.50 a pop leaving aside the initial search), and then GRO.

A great deal of my extravagant expenditure has been not on my own forebears or relatives but on my two one-name studies (both primarily in Scotland)!  I just can't resist the temptation of paying out in order to confirm or resolve puzzles.

As I said, I refuse to count up my pages of 'viewed images' on SP!

Hello there,

Am I too late to register my vote? (It won't seem to let me...).

I must admit that I haven't totted up my total spend so far...but I'd probably get a shock if I did!!

When I was totally stuck on my Wilson Grandfather, I ordered lots of William Wilsons who turned out to be wrong:-(((

Cheers, Romilly.

This was my first poll on Rootschat and I locked the voting back in June as I thought everyone would probably get bored with it after a few weeks.

Should I unlock the voting again?

Al :)

Hello Al,

I've only just found your poll...& would certainly vote if it was open. :) :)

But don't open it just for me...what do other people think?

Best Wishes, Romilly. ;)
