Hmm, what an interesting question!  It's helped me to find out that my Family History programme can't produce this statistic, so I've had a bit of a play - exporting, importing etc.  Can produce the top ten males, but females are a bit trickier as my programme includes them with same id, but a number of times for each married name!!  Will continue to try, but these are the top ten male names:

John   302
William   226
Thomas   155
James   145
George   96
Robert   74
Joseph   71
Samuel   63
Charles   51

Uncommon ones, Rio (1850's)? - where did that come from!!  ???

Jean

Perhaps we should set up a pole to find out if William is the most popular, because it seems to be coming up quite a lot so far!!

For some reason my software does not give a first name list so I cannot give exact numbers on my names but these are the most popular

WILLIAM
JAMES
HUGH
ROBERT
THOMAS
OWEN
DAVID

ELIZABETH
ELEANOR / ELLINOR / ELLEN
MARGARET
JANE
MARY
AGNES

This covers both hubby's side (from Scotland and Northumberland) and mine (Wales) Very popular names throughout the 1800's so it seems regardless of where you are from
