Banks, Bernks or Berk!?
« on: Saturday 18 March 06 16:27 GMT (UK) »
Is there such a place as Silly Banks in Cumberland?
In the 1891 census of the Preston quarter of Whitehaven. a John Murray who I believe may be my 2x Great Grandfather gives his place of birth as, what to me looks like, Silly Banks; the Ancestry.co.uk transcription is "Sillg Bernks"! Perhaps John was having fun with the enumerator and called him a silly berk at the wrong time, who knows? Someone on Rootschat hopefully.
If it is the right john I would have expected to see whitehaven as place of birth.
Census reference is RG12/4315 118 - 1.
John is living in the house of his son Joseph in Coach road, any suggestion help gratefully appreciated.
Many Thanks

However the correct spelling is

Scilly Banks

near Moresby
definitely in the Whitehaven area.

Valda, Geoff, thanks for that info, would scilly banks be classed as the Newtown area of Whitehaven?

'Scilly Banks is a small village on the outskirts of Moresby Parks, situated between Whitehaven and Workington close to the West Cumbrian coast.'

NewTown was at the south end of Whitehaven town.  Scilly Bank is to the NE.
