WW1 War Memorial
« on: Sunday 19 March 06 08:23 GMT (UK) »

Hello!

I haven't been able to find a list of soldiers mentioned on the WW1 War Memorial
in St Helier and I wondered if anybody could possibly tell me if this soldier had been included ?

who died age 41
on 13 November 1916
Son of Mrs. C. Jewell, of St. Heliers; husband of Mary Annie E. Jewell (nee Joyce), of 13, Old St. St. Heliers, Jersey.
Remembered with honour
DARTMOOR CEMETERY, BECORDEL-BECOURT

Thanking you in advance

Annie  :)

Please see below ..... I'd REALLY appreciate being able to locate Charles on the memorial - and I'd really appreciate a photo !! Thank you very much !

Annie  :)

The description below is from Buildings and Memorials of the Channel Islands by Rauol Lempriere (1980)

Jersey's War Memorial, the Cenotaph (1923 by Charles de Gruchy) is located at the eastern end of Parade Gardens, St.Helier, It is built of grey granite from La Moye and enclosed by low ornamental railings. The pedestal with the pylon supports a sarcophagas containing a roll of honour. The inscription on the south side reads OUR GLORIOUS DEAD - THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVER MORE. The north side reads JERSEY A SES ENFANTS MORT POUR LA PATRIE (Jersey her children who died for their country). On the east and west sides are the dates 1914-18 and 1939-45.

Annie -

I had a close look at the memorial today. The general inscriptions are exactly as you have described, but there is no list of names inscribed on the monument itself.

The roll of honour may be contained in the sarcophagus - in which case there might be a copy somewhere in the Archives - or in the nearby Town Hall. I will make further enquiries.

I spent a few on the archives looking for the Roll of Honour - but I couldn't find it !!  ::)

Frustrating to say the least ..... the only other thing I can think of - is to get in touch with the

newspaper !! What do you think ?? I didn't think of the town Hall !  ::)
