MOLLOY, LENEHAN and CUNNEEN in County Clare
« on: Wednesday 06 October 04 12:35 BST (UK) »
I have the following ancestors in County Clare - I've not yet worked out how to research Ireland so any assistance or suggestions would be appreciated.

Matthew Molloy b bef 1830 d bef 1863 Quinn, County Clare
married
Mary Garvey b abt 1823 (daughter of John Garvey and Margaret dates and locations unknown)
Their children
Thomas (b abt 1838, Martin b abt 1844 and Mary)

They migrated to Australia in 1863 I have the details from the migration

In Australia Thomas married

Catherine Lenehan (b abt 1843 Coolnafillah, County Clare)  Her parents were Denis Lenehan and Kate Flynn (dates and locations unknown)

I also have the Cunneen family

Denis Cunneen and Bridget Hickey m bef 1831 in County Clare
Children
James b abt 1831
Catherine b abt 1833 Ennis, County Clare
Bridget b abt 1834 Tomfinlough, County Clare
? ?
Michael ?
Patrick bet 1835 - 1836 Dromoland Castle, near Newmarket-on-Fergus County Clare

Any suggestions on how to confirm birth/baptism dates, marriage dates and potentially parents would really be appreciated.

Jenny.

MY husband has Irish ancestors from Co Clare but I haven't really explored his lot yet, however I have found this website very informative.

Depending what years you need to look up I suppose. ;)

Hi,

Catholic baptisms are available to view on microfilm in the National Library in Dublin from 1816 and also at your loca family history centre. Marriages are available from 1833.

http://scripts.ireland.com/ancestor/fuses/rcparishmaps/index.cfm?fuseaction=showidrecords&parish=Quin&churchid=774

The Griffiths Valuation was taken in 1855 in Co Clare but there is no Molloy in Quin or anywhere else in Clare as head of household. There is 1 in castleknock Dublin, one in Kilcullen Kildare, one in Tallaght, Dublin and one in Lemanaghan Offaly. There are at least 11 John Garvey households in Clare.

There are no Denis Lenehan families anywhere but a few Denis Linehans scattered around Cork.

Coolnafillah may be Coolnahella, Tulla. There are quite a few Cunneen families in Clare but none headed by Denis. You should go to parish records to confirm dates. Do you know theie religion?

Kated,

Thanks for the info it really helps.

I'd had a look at the Griffiths and not been able to make any connections.  A lot of the information that I have was given at the time of immigration so came from the person themself, and was confirmed in later marriage and death certificates.

They are all Roman Catholic so I'll go to the local FHC and start at the top and see what I can find.

Thanks for helping

Jenny.
