Thankyou for pointing out that the June Barnes 1851 census transcription for East Sussex does not include Brighton - June, who I know fairly well was unable to complete what would have been Volume 24 because of the 'Repetitive Syndrone' illness in her hands & fingers.

I understood that someone else was completing it for her - have just checked on the Sussex Family History group and found it was completed by Eastbourne Roots, but is on fiche instead of a printed book as follows:-

Vol 24 - Brighton area (Hove, Preston, Patcham, West Blatchington, Hangleton, Portslade, Aldrington, Southwick, Old Shoreham) by Eastbourne Family Roots – 2 Fiche £3.80.

Thankyou for pointing it out, but, as I lecture in Family & Social History at CCE Colleges in Hastings, Hailsham and Brighton - I am well aware of the sudden increase in the population along the South Coast and the reasons behind it.

Unfortunately, at this moment in time I do not have any information on any Hillman Family in or around Brighton

Just started looking at a family tree put together by a distant relative in my family and passed a few years ago to my father.

My 3xGreat Grandfather was Jabez Nathaniel Hillman. He was born 13-Dec-1824 and christened 9-Jan1825 at Dorset Gardens Wesleyan, Brighton, the son of Nathanael Hillman and Jane Huben. He later worked as Miller's Manager in Bedhampton, Hampshire and had several offspring (I've picked this up in the 1881 census).

I'd like to find out if he had any siblings, and anything at all about his parents.
Hillman (descendents of Thomas Hillman/Elizabeth Gasston); Wells (both family of Joseph Wells, firework artist and the Wells and Pritchett families); Cheese; Pack; and in East Yorkshire, Loft; Wise; Bradley; Harland; Hayton; Pamplin; Ulliott

Hi Roy.  Welcome to Rootschat if you haven't already been welcomed  :)
The IGI has two daughters attributed to a Nathaniel & Jane Hillman;
Elizabeth baptised 13/10/1822, St. Nicholas, Brighton
Jane Maria baptised 13/11/1833   ditto.

Can't find a marriage for them (Nathaniel & Jane) which is a bit disconcerting.

In 1841 it looks as if Nathaniel has died (there is a death reg. for a Nathaniel Hillman on FreeBMD Q3 1839, Brighton reg. district)

Castle St.  Palace.  Brighthelmstone

Jane Hillman  40  Dressmaker  b. Ssx
Jane Hillman   13                      Not born Ssx.

1851.  28 Crown St.  Palace.  Brighton

Jane Hillman  wid  54  Nurse  b. West---? Ssx
Jane Maria            23  Dressmaker  b. Tunbridge Wells, Kent.

It looks to me as if Jane Maria was baptised in Brighton at about age 5.

In 1851 Jabez Nathaniel was lodging with a C. Robinson a police constable at St. Margarets, Westminster.  He was unmarried age 26 & a writing clerk, born Brighton.

Jane Maria married a Henry Wood, Q1 1855, Brighton reg. district (FreeBMD)

in 1861.  West St, Havant, Hants

Henry Wood  33  Grocer & Baker  b. Warnham, Ssx
Jane Maria     33                           b. T/Wells, Kent
Hannah M.      4                            b. Farlington, Hants
Edward           2                            b. Havant
Arthur H.         1                                  ditto
Hannah Wood  19  sister  unm.     b. Ssx
a male apprentice & a female servant.

Hope that's been of help,

jane

Just a little extra.
The IGI has an extracted baptism for Jane Huben born 13/8/1796, baptised 4/9/1796 at Westham, Ssx.  D/o Thomas & Hannah.

Looks like her father married twice;

New Shoreham, West Sussex,   12 Jan 1783:
 Thomas HUBIN
Hannah BIGNALL

Westham, East Sussex,   25 May 1803:
 Thomas HUBEN, widr
 Ann HILTON, sp botp (lic)
 Witnesses: John FUNNEL John CHRISTIAN

Message for Roy -
I also descend from the Hillman/Huben marriage. To be more precise, the Hillman/Watkins marriage. I have lots of info - mostly from the IGI & various family sources.

In Sydney,
Jax

Hello Jane,

Thanks for your post - but for the life of me I can't find this marriage on IGI

New Shoreham, West Sussex,   12 Jan 1783:

Can you help further?

 ;D Hi Jamie,

Jane is still around so I'm sure she'll come back at some point ... I had a look and can't find the marriage on the IGI either.

However, both Thomas' Hubin's marriages are on the Sussex Marriage Index and this may well be Jane's source?

There is no information other than what she has given you here though:

Extract from the Sussex Marriage Index:
Place: New Shoreham, West Sussex,  Date: 12 Jan 1783:
Subject: Thomas HUBIN
Spouse: Hannah BIGNALL

Extract from the Sussex Marriage Index:
Place: Westham, East Sussex,  Date: 25 May 1803:
Subject: Thomas HUBEN, widr
Spouse: Ann HILTON, sp botp (lic)
Extra Information: w: John FUNNEL John CHRISTIAN

Liz
