Hi Gadget

Hmmm I've just had a google at 'Prefetch'.

If I have it right, XP likes to look fast by loading bits of the individual programs we use into the prefetch file, sort of having a cup on your workstation rather than in the kitchen. You can pour yourself a drink quicker and XP appears to operate quicker. Only problem is that once you have a cup, a plate, the phone etc close to hand you have a clutter that slows you down instead. Seems XP does the same filling up value disk space. It appears the prefetch file can be empty periodically to regain some space and a little speed.

Better take my cup and plate back to the kitchen. Now dare I delete all those prefetch files???

Regards
Andy

Yes - now I remember - when I was replacing Husband's ME with XP, I came across it. There's lots about it on the Microsoft site.

Whenever I need to remove any files, rather than delete them I just move them to a folder on my desktop along with details on atextfile about where they belong, that way they can be replaced if need be.
The good side of this is of course the fact that at least your camera is okay.

Hi Denn and Gadget

I haven't worked up the nerve to delete all the prefetch files yet but I may, as you suggest, move them. My main drive is only 9gb but I have a 160gb external so as the main fills, I transfer files to the external. With all the messing about with installing and uninstalling I noticed earlier I was down to 800mb of space left!!!! I've done a bit of deleting and moving and got it back up to just over 2gb free. I think a new system is next on the wish list (with one of those nice flat screens).

The good news is that I've been and scrounged a disc reader off another friend and I can now transfer photos via a card (taken from my old camera)

It's not a perfect solution but as you say at least I can use the camera.
I'll let you know if Kodak come up with any more info on the prefetch front.

Regards
Andy

a bit of defragmenting might not go amiss ;)

I'd really think about the smart card reader suggestion - allows you to use different cameras, with no problem.
At present we use it for my Fuji, daughters Cannon ixus and husbands Cannon digital SLR., easy!!!

Hi Gadget

Are you a clairvoyant on the side? I've just finished defraging the external. It needed a checkdisk first tho'. Note to self - defrag a bit more often.
I defraged the internal once I'd cleared enough space.

Hi Russethouse

The card reader I've borrowed looks like it reads all sorts of cards - so I don't think I'll be giving it back. My friend did say to keep it if it proved useful.

Hi Andy

Just had an e-mail from that friendly chain of camera sellers that I referred you to.
They're offering me a Canon EOS 30D for only £1040 - a snip :o :o :o
Clairvoyant - well I have a Grand Trine in Air or something - that's what they said ;D

Hi Gadget and everyone else who offered advise

Just thought I should let you know how things have panned out.

Kodak were very helpful and sent me instructions on how to disable a file called drst.exe which turns out to be part of my broadband set up!!!
Sceptically, I followed their instructions and  :o - it worked!!!
XP wizard is now able to operate properly. Kodak obviously knew there was an issue with the broadband program/XP wizard/Kodak camera.

No more head scratching.

Thanks for everyones suggestions.

Regards
Andy

Andy

I'm so pleased it worked out in the end ;D So many suppliers are pretty iffy when it comes to support and one is often left to sort it out oneself.
I'm glad that Kodak came through for you.
Now you can get on with taking photos.
Good Luck ;D
