1851/1871 census Bempton/Hunmanby/Scarborough. Completed with thanks.
« on: Thursday 23 March 06 14:16 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for information on 2 branches of my family.  The Leonard family from Hunmanby & the Mason family from Sewerby/Bempton/Hunmanby/Scarborough.  I am writing them in seperate requests, so hopefully it doesn't become too confusing.

On the 1851 & 1871 census I am looking for the Mason family.  I think the family will be living in Bempton in 1851 as it gives place of birth for Jane Mason b. 1847 & Tom Mason b. 1855 as Bempton.  I don't know if the family are living in Hunmanby or Scarborough in 1871.  I have the following information:

1861 Census living in Hunmanby (sorry I don't have any ref. nos.)

Thomas Mason b. around 1814, Sewerby, Head of household
(I don't know his profession)
Sarah Mason, his wife b. around 1834, Wheatley in Nottinghamshire, (this changes to Northumberland in 1881)
Mary Ann Mason, b. aound 1845 in Bempton, his daughter.
Jane Mason, b. around 1847 in Bempton (she won't be on the 1871 census as she has married Richard Leonard & is living in Hunmanby)
Tom S Mason, born around 1855 in Bempton
Frances A Mason born around 1858 in Hunmanby
Sarah E Mason born around 1859 in Hunmanby.
Robert Chandler born around 1833 in Bempton a servant.

In 1881 the family had moved to 3 Belvoir Terrace in Scarborough.  They ran a lodging house.  Ref.  RG11 4804/145 Page 22.  They also lived here in 1891 & 1901.

I hope this is enough information to find them.

Louise

Dear Bee,

Thank you for the information that you found.  I have found the Mason family confusing.  That you found Mary Ann (head) & Sarah E. at 3 Belvoir Terrace, Scarborough without Thomas Mason (father) & Sarah (mother)  is interesting, as in 1881 both Thomas & Sarah are living at 3 Belvoir Terrace and Sarah is described as the lodging house keeper & Mary Ann is a dom. servant.

Thanks once again,

Louise

Dear Bee,

A P.S.

The naming of Sowersby  as Thomas's brother on the 1851 census has allowed me to find the next generation back using the IGI.  Richard Mason married 22.4.1813 Brid, Mary Sawersby.

Thanks once again
Louise
