AARGH! Silly gggg-grandpa.
« on: Thursday 23 March 06 14:27 GMT (UK) »
Ugh, I am tearing my hair out at my 4x great-grandfather Robert J. Barnes' (b abt 1820) inability to give me any useful information about himself! All I really want to know is where he was born (parents would be a bonus).  And what do we have?

1861 Scotland census (Kilmarnock): birthplace "Ireland"
1871 Scotland census: no trace (also not in England, Wales or USA)
1872 ship's passenger list: nationality "English"
1877 US naturalization papers (Dakota Territory): birthplace "Scotland"
1880 US census (South Dakota): birthplace "Scotland"

*Not* helpful! My last gasp hope is the Scottish 1851 census, as and when ScotlandsPeople get round to uploading Kilmarnock.

Thanks for letting me vent - I know you guys will understand.

Hi Anna,

Freecen (www.freecen.org.uk) has about 33% of the 1851 census for Ayrshire transcribed.  I don't know whether Kilmarnock is covered yet but it may be worth having a look.

Regards,

Thanks, Al! Unfortunately FreeCEN doesn't yet have Kilmarnock for 1851, so I will just have to patient with ScotlandsPeople  :)

Spooky - had this update from Scotlandspeople last night :

Quote
We are delighted to announce that, in addition to the 1861, '71, '81, '91
and 1901 census records, the indexes and images for the 1851 Census for
Scotland are now available online at http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

Many Thanks

ScotlandsPeople

Hopefully that means all of it?   Good luck Anna!

Unfortunately not!  I got all excited too when I received that message, but it's just the (belated) announcement of the stuff that's been up on the site for a month or more now. I've been to the site to check, but still no Kilmarnock  :o

Patience is a virtue...

Thanks for your good wishes!
