Hackett/Cooney Nenagh
« on: Friday 24 March 06 10:16 GMT (UK) »
I'm new to this so please bear with me.

My great-great grandmother was Winifred Cooney, born about 1830 and married to James Hackett (cattle dealer).

She "left" him and came to Halifax Yorkshire with her daughter Bridget Hackett.  Bridget married Henry O'brien in Halifax in 1876.

Winifred used her maiden name in the censuses before dying in 1890.

Family lore is that they came from the Nenagh area.

Has anyone any information?

Thanks

In the shot in the dark department, any other Hackett daughters that you know of?  I'm searching for Catherine Hackett, born about 1852 in Ireland. She was in Chicago and married by 1874, probably arrived in the US around 1870, but further back than that I'm clueless.

I have not looked at this forum for years, my apologies.
I have discovered the baptism record in Nenagh for Bridget daughter of JOHN HACKETT and WIN MEARA. The entry is annotated "illegitimate" so perhaps Win never married John.
Bridget was born and baptised in 1856.  In 1864 a Win Meara (recorded as a widow and daughter of Pat) married John Cooney a stone masons labourer in Nenagh.
She seemed to have travelled with Bridget to Halifax prior to 1876 (Bridget's marriage year) and until she died in 1891 referred to herself in censuses as Winifred Cooney.  I have no knowledge of any siblngs that Bridget may have had.

For others here's the link to the 1864 marriage on 12 October-

In Nenagh RC Church.
Fathers John Cooney a labourer and Pat Meara a mason.

The marriage says John Cooney is a Soldier.
Bridget's birth was this the one in Lisbourney, Nenagh?

I haven't come across a soldier connection before.  The church records I got my info. from states John Cooney was a stone labourers mason.  I am pretty sure that Bridget hailed from Nenagh.

Sorry cannot help.  I have never heard any family talk of siblings to Bridget I'm afraid.
