Chapmans in Great Ellingham
« on: Friday 24 March 06 12:35 GMT (UK) »
I am having trouble finding the following family and any help would be most appreciated:-

Edward Chapman who married Lydia Blazier in 1815 at Great Ellingham.

Children (all christened at Great Ellingham)

John c. 10/12/1815
James c. 8/6/1817  My g-g g/father and records held
Rebecca c. 13/10/1822
Sara c.13/10/1822
Robert c. 4/9/1825 records held
William c. 23/3/1828
Eliza c. 12/12/1830
Marianne c. 19/5/1833

I have found James and Robert and am pretty sure I have found the mother, Lydia in 1861 as a h-k in Bradford but have had no luck with any of the rest.

Of the 2 that I have located I noticed that their place of birth was given as "Elenam".

Have you tried using soundex instead of exact spelling and leaving the "Great" off?

Also, apparently there are heaps of CHapmans in the surrounding village churchyards so you might want to use Rockland, Caston and Attleborough as alternatives

No I think it is Ellingham.

The census details for James and Robert tie in with the IGI christening records for them.

Have you tried leaving out all names anf just putting Ellingham in?  This gives you everybody recorded there, and they may have changed their names slightly to perhaps Chaplin or Chaplyn

There are Burials of Chaplins in Gt Ellingham, Lt Ellingham, however these are much older.
excample, William Chaplin died Jan 1875 aged 75...also his wife Jane Ann died 1870 aged 69.

As advised before Chapmans show up in Attleborough, Caston and Rockland all saints,  also Stow Bedon, all nr by villages to Gt Ellingham.

Also remember there is another Ellingham in the Clavering hundred / district.

Gt Ellingham & Lt Ellingham are under the Wayland district/hundred...
