I managed to prove that a gr gr gr gr grandfather according to a distant cousin was the wrong one.  Trouble was she had researched the family back to the 1400s and did not appreciate me telling her it was the wrong one!

Well to be honest I am sure that the chap is related to us somehow, he was called Winchester, there are hundreds in Sussex and I am sure they all came from 1 originally.

It does bother me BUT I still add them with a view to checking.  I have some on my paternal side at the moment that I really am not sure about.  Hoping that a rellie who says he has some old birth/death certs can help but he is hard to get hold off!

See the Surnames I am researching on the surname interest table

I keep my ???queries??? in a separate folder until I get confirmation at least once. Then, and only then, are they added to the computer and the paper confirmation(s) added into the appropriate lever arch file.
I have quite a large folder now where every page has a large pencilled ? on it and my rubber looks almost brand new   ;D

That sounds like quite a good idea, I recently had to take off a couple of people from my tree from info given to me by someone else.

Then I had a snotty email from someone else telling me they were incorrect.  I told him they were so distant I hadn't had time to check them out, I was starting with the people closer to me.

He didn't answer and I emailed again to check he had received my email, as I had given him some info on other possibilities, he sent back another email, no thank you just more rudeness!

Some people!

Even though i started this line of thought in a light hearted manner it does quite seriously trouble me.
I notice that one of these last posts from 'runner' comments on the large section of ????? that he is collecting. Me too.
Over the last few days i have worn my 'mouse finger' down to its tail scrolling through what seems like endless variations on a theme.
Names-dates-dob etc etc.
I have a large pile of papers that i've printed off from censuses [ is that the plural of census?] scattered on the floor at the foot of my chair. and like runner, and i suspect, most of you, i hesitate between which 'name' to continue checking out. Honestly at my age i can do without all this decision making  ::) ::) ::) ???

p.s but we still carry on though, don't we. Just like little terriers!!

Yes  :)

This tip might help:

Topic: Spreadsheets help track Surnames
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,31779.0.html

If you enter all your names, then you can use the sort and filter functions in excel or OpenOffice to compare dates, addresses, occupations, DoB, or anything else, and  -- who knows -- you may even find a connection
