Sophia Hope Johnstone is the daughter of James Johnstone, (1741, Tranent), and Jean Bird.
James Johnstone is the son of George (1715, Tranent) and Jean Marshall.
George is the son of George (1670, Seton, ELN) and Janet Cubie(1673, Prestonpans)
George is the son of John (1643, Tranent) and Isabel Erskine
John is the son of James Johnstoun and Margaret Johnstoun.
Thanks for the data on Sarah Hope  Johnstone's ancestors .   I am trying to find a link to my Johnston family from Tranent and Prestonpans.
I have the middle name HOPE in a few of my  Johnston.
Earliest I have is William Johnston b 1736  as my message above - It could be that he was a brother or other rel to James you listed born 1741.  Would you have any of the siblings of James b 1741? (if not I will start a search)

Thanks
Tricia

Good afternoon Tricia;

I will try to get in a few hours of digging into the Johnston family line in Tranent in the next few days.

My maternal grandmother was Mary Johnstone Peden from Cockenzie. She arrived here in British Columbia in 1889 when a group of fishermen, including her father,  were brought out here from Tranent in order to establish the West Coast commercial salmon fishery. Many of these fishermen were related through marriage over many generations, and trying to sort out the relationships can be frustrating. For example,  Robert Grieg Peden married Sophia Hope Johnstone Reid. Two of his uncles married Johnstone girls as well. One of the uncles was my GG Grandfather.

I'll keep you informed of any progress in this line as well as anything I find on the Reids and the Hopes

All the best,

John

Hello folks - here's another Johnstone/Johnston/Reid trying to piece together what past generations didn't get around to recording.

I'm Peter Johnstone, currently living at Mercer island, Washington, USA. Born in the Edinburgh area, and trying to piece together my 'Dad's' 'Johnstone/Johnston' line ..... which, after several Johnstone(s) brough me to the marriage of John Johnston and Janet Reid at Gladsmuir, E. Lothian in 1804. The record coming forward from there is pretty good through the next increments of the line coming to me of dad's born in 1805, 1847, 1875, and my Dad in 1913 - and, yes, I've kept the line chugging along with my own son in 1986.

But, its this Johnston/Reid marriage that proven to be the 'wall'. They were both likely born in/around the Gladsmuir/Haddington/Cockenzie 'triangle' in the 1775-1785-ish era ..... so, I was wondering is any of you out there happen to 'have' any Janet Reid or John Johnston(e) appearing around there in that general time 'box'?

I wish you all success in your searches and hope for a break in mine!

There seems to be a veritable trove of records prior to that 1775-1785-ish 'box' that I'll likely be able to use IF I can find out who John's dad was - any help will be most appreciated.

Thank You.

Hello there!

I wonder if your Johnstons are my kin too - my grandfather William Johnston was from Cockenzie, born in 1900.  His parents were John Johnston and Margaret Donaldson, and there is a suggestion that John's mother was a Stuart.  We have photographs of William's parents and of both grandparents, but are not sure which is which.

I've done a bit of research on my grandmother's side, but not started on the Johnston side yet, so it would be really good not to be re-inventing the wheel.

To anyone from afar... Cockenzie is still bristling with Johnstons and Donaldsons, which makes a geneaologist's life a hard one.  My mother says one set of Pedens were close kin too - she was brought up there, and kept visiting until my grandfather's death in the 70s.

Happy researching to you all.

Just wondering if you have any other children recorded to George b 1715 and Jean Marshall  or to George 1670 and Janet Cubie.
Thanks

Hi there,

I would like to make contact with anyone who has the following Johnston/Johnstone's in their family tree:-

My great grandparents are Peter Johnston (born 1848 in Newbattle) & Ann Gordon (born 1856 in Crichton). This generation of the family lived in and around the village of Chesterhill (parish of Cranston), Midlothian.

Peter Johnston's parents were Peter Johnston (born 1805 in Gladsmuir) & Jean/Jane Bennett (born 1807 in Prestonpans).

And Peter Johnston's parents were John Johnston (born 1779 in Gladsmuir) & Janet Reid (born 1873 in Gladsmuir).

Many thanks
Look forward to hearing from you.

Dear Squareparents (Tim):- Peter Johnstone here at Mercer Island, Washington USA. I found an emailed notice that you had posted something on this web page relating to the Johnstones from Cranston/Chesterhill/Edgehead in Midlothian. Although I was able to read your post I was not able to repond to it - there was no 'reply' button on the page. I am certain that we are related and i see that you are online right now. Unfortunately, i had to dig back through some other posts to find this one so as to reply to you. If you are able to get in touch I can be reached either through this page ... assuming that a 'reply' button' will appear at my end, or you can reach me at p.johnstone@msn.com. TY, Peter J/
