1841 census lookup please - CRONE
« on: Sunday 26 March 06 17:04 BST (UK) »
I would appreciate someone could kindly check the 1841 Kent census for JOHN CRONE, born about 1828 in Queenborough or Sheerness, Kent.  His father was DENNIS CRONE, who served in the coastguard service.  I have no further information on the father, only that by 1856, he had died.

Please note that I have already posted this request on the Cornwall and Devonshire boards, but it's been checked that John's not in either county in 1841.

Many thanks for any help.

Hi Clare

There are some pages for Sheppey Coastguards including all the census and some baptisms etc. on the web:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~puxty/

Have you noticed this family in Cornwall 1851 .............. Eastchurch is in Sheppey:

1851 - Downderry, St Germans, Cornwall

James CRONE head mar 63 coastguard b.Cork Ireland
Mary wife 54 b.Cork Ireland

hi Casalguidi

Yes, I did think for ages that the James Crone on the 1851 census was John's father - there seemed to be so many connections, eg Sheppey, coastguards, the unusual name.......but!!  I've recently got a copy of John Crone's marriage certificate and he lists his father as 'Dennis Crone, coastguard'.  So I'm wondering if James and Dennis were brothers......

And yes, I've already plundered the Sheppey coastguard site!  There are a few Crones there, but again, relating to James Crone's family.  Finding John Crone on the 1841 census (wherever he's hiding) will probably resolve things....it's just knowing where he is at the time!

best wishes

I have, by the way, checked all the 1841 transcribed Kent census records on kim's site: http://kimbo1959.tripod.com/id1.html   :-\

This is really a toughie....John can only be about 13 or 14.  Probably his father has already died......I feel he must be living in one of the south coast counties (Kent to Cornwall).  He's a seafarer, through and through - he must be near the coast!!

Perhaps that's your answer - he was at sea.

Yes, Bearkat, that's a possibility.

It's just that when he joined the navy in 1846, he was listed as a 'landsman', a term used for someone who didn't have any previous naval training.......

G-g-grandfather, where are you!!

Since the 1841 census has been available, my search for John Crone has ended.....I can't find the old b*gger..

Pre-1841 he has been either at sea (aged about 14) or he's in Ireland with his dad, Dennis Crone.
