I would say its 1930s the little girls wearing well worn  boots which suggests hand me downs  no other choice during the war because there was no shoes to buy even if you were lucky enough to have the money to buy any I had to where a pair of those about  1946 to go to school the snow was three feet deep and I hated them

I think that even with an almost exact date, it can be tricky to work out who children are from pictures.

In the family photo box, we have 2 photos of little girls who were my grandmothers sisters. My grandmother was one of five girls, but the first two died before she was born and the other two died when she was 2 so she doesn't have any idea which sisters they are.

The best idea we can all come up with is that the pictures were of the two sisters who died when she was 2, and they were taken just in case anything happened to them after the first deaths. But who knows?

I think you'll need to go on probabilities rather than exactitudes. Best guesses may not be correct, but certainly better than labelling the picture "unknown" and hiding her away for ever more. She's so sweet and deserves some light every now and again.

my first thoughts on trying to date this photograph is set at the 1930's, sadly it can be very hard to date photographs of young children as there can be very little to go on. What I can say is that it is a standard studio setting and as photographers did not up date their furnishings all that often I can see why Rachael thought that it could be Victorian ( I have some photographs in my own collection of my mother taken in the late thirties early forties in the same studio in East London as her grandparents had sat in, in about 1900 and my mothers photographs show the same backdrop and furniture). The young child would have been aged about three to four years of age and would have only stood about three foot high or there abouts. Ringlets and style of hair worn by the girl was in fashion for a long period and was made more so after the emergence of Shirley Temple in her first film of 1932. The type of foot wear that she has  had been in fashion since the late Victorian period and throughout the Edwardian period. In fact these type of small boots can still be purchased if you know where to look.

Hi all

Thankyou for your help everyone, it's really helped me to narrow down who she could be! I'll ask my gran now if she has any idea who the little girl is, the dates will probably help her!

Thanks again!
