I have seen sailor uniforms on cartoons etc but never realised they really did wear such wide trousers.  Surely they weren't practical!

Apparently they were  practical.  I just googled and found they were introduced in 1817 so men could roll them up to swab the decks.  Also they could take them off in a hurry if they had to abandon ship and tie the legs together to make a life preserver if necessary!

Jill

LOL and LOL, I've just had this vision of a whole bunch to sailors trying to get out their trousers, abandon ship and tie them together to make a life preserver.

I love this photo - it cracks me up! It reminds me of that American Gothic painting where the old guy is holding a pitchfork.

Check out the waistband height on these trousers!

To come back to Rian's starter photo and Pru's comment:

Great photo Rian!  Can you believe they used to dress their poor little boys up like that

Apparantly is was quite the fashion. I have these two photos of my Grandfather:

1893, Aged about 4, I think,                               and a year or so later

Very fetching outfits.  Although he doesn't look that happy.

Do you think it had any affect on them to dress up as little girls?

I am sorry I have no old photographs but just have a look at the styles of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
