Dublin Docks
« on: Monday 27 March 06 17:06 BST (UK) »
My uncle was Richard Moore who died on 18 December 1968.  His death certificate shows he was a docker and died of a fractured skull.  He lived at 88 Church Road, Dublin.  I do not know Dublin well and was wondering what area of the docks he may have worked living at that address.  I believe he did not drive.  His father was also a docker and his address is noted also as 88 Church Road.  Any help appreciated.

Hiya Rustie,

Keep your fingers crossed here. Newspapers of the time may have a write up about your Uncle. I am in Dublin today. I am just about to head towards the Newspaper library to see if I can get some info for you. In the meantime here is a website containing details about Dublin's Docklands. www.dublindocklands.ie/cold_fusion/dublin_docklands/what_is_it/what_is_it.cfm

All the Best, Chris

I have made a mistake.  It was my uncle John Moore who had the fractured skull.  Sorry if I have made you look for nothing.

Hiya Rustie,

I thought the accident happened on the day your relation died. I could not trace either a death notice or a report of the accident. Did he have the accident some time prior to his death ??? He coud have worked in any part of the docks.

All the Best, Chris

Chris.  I am not sure when the accident happened.  The details are from his death certificate.  He was pronounced dead by the coroner which has lead me to believe it must have happened on the day.  I know nothing or very little about this side of my family.  My mother married late, then moved to England and most of my uncles were dead by the time I was born.  They all died in their 50's, all dockers like my granddad.  If they lived in the East Wall area what news paper would the deaths have been announced in?  Thanks Rustie.

http://www.unison.ie/irish_independent/

Irish Independant newspapers (they cover the Irish Independent and Evening Herald)

Irish Times

and the Irish Press and Evening Press now no longer in print.

http://www.dublincity.ie/living_in_the_city/libraries/ have a full collection of old newspapers

The National Library also has a nation wide amazing archive of old papers.

I would send a couple of e-mails to the libraries and also the " Indo" they may be able to help you further.

Best wishes

Rustie,

If you are in England and can get to Colindale (Northern Line) the British Library has their newspaper collection there.

Try this web site:
http://www.bl.uk/catalogues/newspapers.html

Copies of all the papers Mo mentions have been taken since first published and cover your time frame.

Good luck
