Annie.
Here is another pic of the war diary.....

I have to say that in all of the diaries there is no mention of
my grandfather although we was wounded 4 times, there
are mention of others including lower ranks, but most names
mentioned were officers!.

Mike.

Townson - Cartmel                      O'Malley - Askeaton, Ireland
Sadler - Dymock & Salford           Tomlinson - St Peters, Leeds
Wilkinson - Salford                      Chant - Sherbourne, Dorset
Garner - Pendleton

Annie,

My great-uncle was an officer in 71st Siege Battery.

This battery together with the 72nd and 51st (!!) SBs formed the South African Heavy Artillery Brigade and were assigned to the Canadian Corps Heavy Artillery at Ypres from 4th to 16th June 1916. I have the relevant pages from the war diary.

The 71st moved back to Somme.

I would suggest you try another post to the Great War Forum asking about the whereabouts of WO95/5494 (NA file) which contains the battery allocations. If you can establish the HAG (Heavy Artillery Group) to which the 51st SB was assigned then I'm certain someone could tell you its location in November '16.

Good luck,

Justin

Annie,

In other sources the battery is referred to as the 51st Howitzer Battery, e.g. http://www.1914-1918.net/bat14_5.htm, which gives an account of the fighting at Ypres in June '16.

However, the NA has the war diary for.... 51 Siege Battery, RGA! Sadly, from Aril '17.

Hope Dick or someone else can help. You could always try phoning the NA.

Justin

Hi Annie

Don't know if you will get this as your post is a while ago and you probably have been able to work out a lot about Charles, he was the son of Ann Julia Groizard (Jewell) who married an ancestor of mine Jean (John) Sinel in St Helier Jersey.  All the Sinels came from there so that is the connection with St Helier...His mother was born and died in St Helier however his father died at the age of 30 in England...Just thought i would pop this in just in case  :)

HI!,

Sorry to hijack/revive the post but Google is really to blame. I found this post and noticed that 'Saddles' mentioned having a copy of the 28th Siege Batt R.G.A War Diaries. I think my great grandfather served for a time with the 28th. is there any possibility i might be able to 'pinch' a digital copy from you?

Many thanks
