Military Records

I am trying to trace my great grandfather who we believe was in the 17th Lancers in mid 19th Century.  Can anyone tell me where I can find out whether he was or not?  I have contacted the Lancers who say they are unable to help with individual requests.  Are there any online registers?

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/militaryhistory/army/ - the discharge registers would be the first place to look.  You might want to post on the Armed Forces board here with more info about who you're looking for.

The National Archives catalogue has discharge records indexed up to 1854.

http://www.regiments.org/deploy/uk/reg-cav/d17.htm - deployment of the 17th Lancers.

www.1837online.com has the overseas bmd registers, which includes some army births within England.
