Newbie Help
« on: Wednesday 29 March 06 15:29 BST (UK) »
Hi I am new to family history and have started with my graddad. He was David Elliott born 1911 in the South Shields area. I believe his father was William and Mother Mary Jane formerly Smith. Any help or advice anyone can give when it comes to researching North East relatives would be appreciated.

Hello

There is a birth for a David G Elliott - mother's maiden name Smith - registered in the March quarter of 1912 in South Shields.  (10a 1717 GRO ref)

If you get the birth certificate this will confirm (or otherwise)  his father's name.  You can then track down their possible marriage (did he have any older siblings?) and this certificate will give the names of both parties fathers.  You should then be able to start using cencus.

Hope this helps.

You could go to the registry office and ask them to check the cert first if it has the same information as you think it should have and you want it buy it. Would be a shame if you paid for an incorrect cert.

Hi MacFc,

Kelly's Directory - 1914 - page 361

There are nine people with the name Elliott. [South Shields]

The only William is William Elliott, photographer.

You will probably find that the name Elliott has many variations in spelling as you go back in time.

Directories are like a modern day phone book. You might find a name, occupation and address.
Dawson,    Carruthers,     Lawson,     Robinson,
Elliott,  Keily,  Adams,  Jolly/Jolley,  Wilson,  Hills,  Spearing,  Bowe.

Northumberland and Durham  [Gateshead, Washington,
Newcastle-upon-Tyne]

Hello MacFc,

Is your William related to either a Frederick or George Elliott that lived at Cleadon do you know?

Regards
