Hampshire/Gayleard/Gaylard
« on: Thursday 30 March 06 18:01 BST (UK) »
Hello I'm new at this chat or board thing but I have been doing a bit of genealogy.  I am at a bit of an impass and have been researching the name Gayleard (often spelled Gaylard) in the Portsea area.  So far I have George Gayleard married to Ann Pearce, thier children Mary Ann Sarah Elizabeth, born 1846, George Henry John born 1848, and William Henry born 1858. Have found some references in the IGI however can't seem to find them in most census records outside of 1881 and can't seem to find George and Ann marriage.
Any help would be greatly appreicated.
Thanks

Yes, this is them.  Is this the 1851 census?  Looking from their ages it must be. Thank you very, very much. I am printing them off and adding to the Genealogy Binder.  Thanks again.

Sorry, Yes that was the 1851 census :) Have had difficulty tracing them in 1861, but thought I would put this family up as in most respects it seems to fit and names are often misspelled. :)

Wow, that looks like them.  I actually managed to find the names in the 1881 census spelled Guyheard and Greybeard and only because I searched through thier in-laws names and found them in the same household. What always made it difficult was that even on the marraige certificates the ages were greatly exaggerate.
Thanks again.

When you've got an unusual name like this it's worth searching the partial free BMD indexes on ancestry:

http://www.ancestry.com/search/rectype/vital/freebmd/bmd.aspx

It isn't complete but it's possible that every entry in Portsea is related to your family.  With the aid of the census entries you can then work out the births, marriages and deaths for family groups
Middx - VAUS, ROBERTS, EVERSFIELD, INMAN, STAR, HOLBECK, WYATT, BICKFORD, SMITH, REDWOOD
Hants - SMALL, HAMMERTON, GRIST, FRYER, TRODD, DAGWELL, PARKER, WOODFORD, CROUTEAR, BECK, BENDELL, KEEPING, HARDING, BULL
Kent - BAYLY, BORER, MITCHELL, PLANE, VERNON, FARRANCE, CHAPMAN, MEDHURST, LOMAX, WYATT, IDEN
Devon - TOPE, BICKFORD, FOSTER
YKS - QUIRK, McGUIRE, BENN
Nott/Derbs - SLACK
Herts - BARNES

Thank you very much , it is greatly appreciated.   I have checked out the BMD in Rootsweb and many years ago went through the microfilm at our local genealogy society.  It does seem that most of the Gaylard and Gayleards are in the same family, however I did manage to find one that wasn't.  An Elizabeth gets married in the 1860's and according to the Marriage certificate her father is a Henry.   However the great mystery to me has always been this family unit because I can't seem to find George Gayleard and Ann Pearce being married in the Hampshire area.  And then for some strange reason George the son marries and then seems to almost dissappear.  I do have pictures and records of Mary Ann Gayleard who is my grandfather's aunt, but absolutely no mention of the older brother. I'm actually believing that George the father is son to William Gayleard, Saddler from Portsea, however this one piece still remains a mystery to me.... the marriage.  I thought I might get a break in the census records, but so far little light has come.  But I am very much enjoying the search and am trying to widen the circle I am looking through.
Sorry for the length of this.
