Same birth ref.number????????

Has anyone come across this before?

I have been checking births on another site.
I know a relatives parents had changed their surnames for whatever reason.
I have found a child born with same Christian names,but registered under both surnames.
The birth ref numbers are identical.
Same year,same qtr,same Christian names, same county, only different surname.
I have also discovered another child listed in this way.
Needless to say I have sent off for one of the birth cert.to confirm my suspicions.

Forgot to mention,these are living people.
Makes you wonder about the implications if this turns out to be correct.
Cant wait until the cert arrives.
I will let you know.

Would still like to know if anyone has found the same.

Hi Bennett

Not come across any in my research but wondered if this is a similar situation.

When my daughter was born I was not married, so her birth was registered in my maiden name but with her father's details on it. After we married, we sent off her birth certificate & our marriage certificate and had it legally changed to her fathers (my married) surname.

Is it possible there may be two entries for her under both surnames? I'll have to go and have a look now.

You made me curious so I have just been onto 1837online to check the entries for my daughter.

The attached are the entries both for her birth year. The first is just after birth (registered under my maiden name) and the second is after we legally chaged it once married (this was over two years' after her birth.

I have never thought about this before, just assumed the original entry would be amended. I guess that is what the numbers beside each entry refer to.

Hopefully I shall find out soon,when the birth cert arrives.

No problem, however it has now got me thinking.

Do you think it would be possible to obtain a copy of the first birth certificate now?

I was under the impression when we changed my daughter's birth certificate that the first one would, technically, no longer exist.

Does this mean my daughter could have two identities - with all this talk of identity theft nowadays, it's a bit worrying isn't it.

Looks like an email to the records office to pose the question now.

Hi Peeps,
Just to let you all know,I collected the birth cert in question,and my suspicions were confirmed.
The certs are identical,the scary thing is,this person could now go on to re-invent themselves,bank loans,passport.
I asked the lady at the Register Office,why this had happened,she could give no reasonable explanation understandably.
There had been no change in circumstances whatsoever.

Very strange!  My Godson was born before his parents married and the situation is exactly the same.  I've just checked and there are two records with the same reference number, one under his mother's maiden name and one under his father's surname.

Al
