I know some one  called Sonny who's proper name is Eileen !!  Maybe it is because the have a sunny out look on life???

My brother in law was always know as sonny his name was william and so was his father, he was called sonny so people would know which william they were talking about.

Anne, I like your idea. his father was called William too so I need to look for a son William. Trouble is it is after 1908 and neither free BMD or Lancs. BMD has done Salford for that date.

We have a Sonny in the family and he was Frederick Alexander Ralph.  I suspect its just an affectionate name picked at random.

another one for the pot. The wife has a cousin in Canada who is known as Sonny by everyone but his name is Walter.

 Hi alllegs:
I have ancestry but I thought their BMD was the same as free BMD. The family name was Knowles- William and Emily. I have their marriage in 1903 at St Luke's Pendleton. I believe all the children were born in Pendleton as they were there in 1911( Directory). George, Harry and Sonny were there names. Harry went to Australia( that's all I know), George never married and Sonny-who knows. I'm hoping he married and had some offspring. Ny best bet will be the church records but unless someone has access to them I will have to wait until I go to Salt Lake City this summer.
