Hi, I don't think it's all that common but I'm open to correction.   It probably comes from the name of the river Teify which flows through Cardigan (Welsh name Aberteifi - the mouth of the Teifi).   Pronunciation is T I (as in eye) V E (as in see).   That is TIVEE with the accent on the 1st syllable.   Hope that's clear, it seem's very complicated for a short word  :)

Hi Rootsfinder,

I think that its a name thats gone out of favour in recent generations. I've noticed it on the Censuses for Wales a few times though.

Here's a lovely link to a Teify  talking about his memories:

Hi Rootfinder, in the Rhondda Teify is quite a common name amongst the older generation, it is usually the shortened version of TEIFFION when it is a mans name
but I also know a few older ladies that are called Teify.

Anyone know if it could also be changed to Taffy? Thanks for the responses, everyone!

Dear Rootsfinder, the nickname Taffy comes from the river Taff and is given to most Welsh people who venture across the border into England, I don't know if it would be considered politically correct these days, it is like calling someone from Scotland  Jock, or an Irishman Mick or Paddy,

I think the Aussies use 'pom' for all Brits.   I am told that the term came into use because Brits were always eating apples.   From the French pomme!   Very cultured that.
