Tranent?
« on: Saturday 09 October 04 19:42 BST (UK) »

Could someone tell me if the parish Tranent is in Haddingtonshire or in East Lothian and if it's name changed to something else after a certain year?
I suppose it's obvious, but since I don't live in Scotland I can't seem to figure it out. I have an ancestor who was born in Tranent in 1679 and I can't begin to look up some things without  the accurate discription.
                                 Thanks--- Renee :)

Hi Renee,

Tranent is in East Lothian, formerly known as Haddingtonshire in the 19th century - I'm not sure what year the change of name happened.

Here's the Genuki page that gives some detail...

I can't seem to find a date for when any borders changed so I think the 2 names, East Lothian & Haddingtonshire, are alternatives to each other.

From Wilkipedia, hope this helps.

When abolished, for local government purposes, in 1975, the county of East Lothian bordered the county of Midlothian to the west, and the county of Berwick to the south. The county was called Haddingtonshire until 1921. Although border changes saw several villages on the outskirts of Edinburgh (e.g. Whitecraig) transferred to the city, most residents of the "old Haddingtonshire" do not regard them as part of the same county.

Ireland - Tracey, Conroy, Pat(t)erson.
