Elusive BRIGGS - how can I find them?
« on: Sunday 02 April 06 02:44 BST (UK) »
Hi Everyone.
I'm absolutely begging for help on this one.

John Briggs, his wife and five children arrived in South Australia on the  "Poictiers"  from London via Plymouth in 1848.
My gg grandfather George was one of those children.  He married Ellen Mc Manus and ended up living in Young New South Wales.

I have as many certs relating to George as I can get and have lots of info about his time in Australia and his descendants.   I can't find any info about his father John Briggs, the remaining children or his mother Kate (Duiett).

The place of birth on George's death cert is Leicestershire.  His year of birth could be anywhere between 1829 1nd 1832 as different ages are on each source of info.

I haven't been able to find any Duiett's in the IGI and other databases that I've checked out.

Any ideas about how I can find out info about the remaining family who arrived in SA  and about ancestors in the UK?
TIA
ciao Bertoli

Hi Bertoli

This website:
http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/familyHistory/search.htm

Has record of a Bridget BRIGGS, who died Grafton district, NSW in 1884.
Father: John. Mother: Kate

A (spinster?) sister to your George perhaps?

(I've modified this message, as I realise in a comment before, I confused Kate McMANUS and Kate DUiETT :P)

Re: DUIETT
If you search spelling: DIUETT / British Isles on IGI, there are a lot of them with various spelling variations.

Cheers

Hello.

Do you have the names of John/Kates children that arrived in 1848
and their ages.....I ask because there is a marriage of a John to one
Ann Campbell, father given as John and this was in 1857, his age
given as 22, which means he was born 1835.

Hello Saddler and Ambly
Thanks for your replies - I've been stuck on this family for a while.
I don't know the names of any of the other children - I only know that there were five chn in 1848 from the passenger records.

Saddler, is the John & Ann Campbell marriage in SA? The time would fit nicely as George was there until at least 1858 when my g grandmother was born.  The rest of their 8 children were born in and around Young NSW between 1861 and 1876

Ambly, I think I'll get the Bridget Briggs death cert - it is worth checking out.  i'll also revisit the IGI.  I've looked pretty thoroughly before but it is worthwhile checking again.

Thanks to both of you.
ciao Chriis

Hi.

Yes, the marriage is in S.A. and I have the S.A. marriages from 1842-1937
and deaths 1842-1915......unfortunately my births disk no longer works.

If this John is the son  then being born in 1835 makes his fathers birth
around 1815, assuming this John was the first born, this however would take your idea of John senior born around 1829 back some.

I also have the 1841 census for S.A. and only one Briggs (Henry) is shown

Mike

Thanks Mike
John Briggs is highly likely to be George's brother.  George was also married at the Catholic church in Mintaro in 1857 - at the time he was a farmer living at Wakey Valley in SA (no one seems to know where that was  :( )

George was born approx 1829 - 32, I don't have a date for his father John and have no info about him.  I haven't found him or Kate  in BDM searches in Vic, NSW & WA.

Where did you buy your cd?  It might be worthwhile me getting a deaths cd as there may be a few Briggs to check out as most seem to have stayed put in SA.
ciao Chris

Hello Chris.

I have the deaths CD its the births CD that does not work, and this is
because I was asked a couple of years ago if I would loan my set to
the local senior citizens, so I backed them up and presented the set
for them to use, they returned Marriage/deaths and forgot the Births
CD which was then stolen, I should have made them pay for a new one
but as I am a pensioner I decided not to, then late last year my backup
copy ceased to function, now I wonder if the others are going to do tha
same!.

You can obtain the CD's from
http://www.macbeth.com.au/

The births(1842-1906) have gone up in price to $260

There are some 58 Briggs deaths and I have only extracted the Mintaro
ones.

Mike.

Thanks Mike
$260 is quite a bit - I'll have to think about that one :)

Thanks heaps for the list of Mintaro deaths - I'll check these out.  John Briggs age 84Y died at Parkside - was that the the name of the psychiatric hospital in Adelaide?
ciao
