Sorry, Harribobs, I'm being obtuse  ::).  What it said on the marriage cert of his son in 1927 was that my g-grandfather was 'sergeant, RAMC, deceased', which leads me to think that his last 'job' was in 1919 when he was discharged from the army, probably injured or impaired in some way, and subsequently died. I think.....

I also wonder if the VI of the 'LAVIA' (or whatever) relates to the roman numerals of the KR 192 - ie '(xvi) No longer physically fit for service'?
