1881 Broadmoor Criminal Lunatic Asylum COMPLETED
« on: Monday 03 April 06 09:08 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I have just found my gt Grandfather's brother Llewllyn EDWARDS in Broadmoor Criminal Lunatic Asylum, in the 1881 census.  It looks like he was already there in 1871.

I am really interested to know what he did to come to be there.  How do I find out?

Can anyone help?

regards,
Christine :)

Hi (or should that be Salut  :) ) Christine,

According to this
http://www.institutions.org.uk/asylums/england/BRK/broadmoor_asylum.htm

the best seems to contact Berkshire Record Office

Hi Christine

Don't know this will help at all, but found this website which gives info about such institutions including Broadmore Criminal Lunatic Asylum.

Hello,

Thank you for providing the links.

I have read them, and it seems that Broadmoor records are sealed - I am not going to find anything out that way.

I think I am going to have to go through the census' and try and narrow down when he was sent.  He is still a 'free man' in 1861, but I think he is already locked up in 1871.

If you have access to the 1871 census, could you confirm that he is there at that time?

His occupation is listed as Masters Assistant in the Royal Navy, so maybe I can research his time with the Royal Navy and see if it turns up any clues.

Any ideas of what to do next are very welcome!

Many thanks
Christine :)

Can't see him in 1891 or 1901 so looks like he may have died - or he's hiding.

I once found out why someone was in Broadmoor by searching the Times Archive.  Some public libraries have online access to this.

Hello Nell,

That sounds like a good idea - I will give it a try when I am in the UK in August.

I have contacted the Berkshire records office and they say that although they have the records, I have to contact Broadmoor directly for the information, which is what I will try next.

Thanks to everyone in this thread,

Christine :)
