Brecon/Glamorgan censuses 1851-71
« on: Monday 03 April 06 10:12 BST (UK) »
Don't know whether Rhys or anyone else can help me with these two queries.

Firstly, I'd like to obtain information from any of the above censuses for the family of my great-grandmother, Ann(e) Jones. I know she was 25 when she married my great-grandfather, Joseph Evans, in Rhymney on 19 October 1874, and think her precise date of birth may be 15 April 1849. Her father was James Jones, an ostler, and I believe the family at the time of her birth were living at Llansantffraid, near Brecon.

Secondly, I have located another branch of my family on the 1881, 1891 and 1901 censuses living at Pantywaun, near Merthyr Tydfil. My great-great-grandparents were David and Mary Thomas, in 1881 apparently aged 32 and 33 respectively, and then living at 3 Pantywaun, although the family later moved to the Royal Arms pub. Anyone able to locate information on the family from earlier censuses? Incidentally, David Thomas is detailed in the 1891 census as being born in Glamorgan, Gelligaer, but in 1881 this is detailed as Carmarthen and in 1901 it becomes Carmarthen, Llan.....something, Llangain, possibly.

Any information would be gratefully received.

Hallo. Mike

The closest match I can find in 1861 is:
RG9/3999 folio 73 page 12 - Bedwellty
16 George Street, Bedwellty, Monmouthshire
James Jones, head, mar, 45, Labourer (Ironwks), Radnorshire - Glasbury
Martha, wife, mar, 39, Radnorshire - Cefnllys
Ann, daur, unm, 12, scholar, Breconshire - LLansandfraid
Elizth, daur, unm, 8, scholar, Monmouthshire - Bedwellty
Chas Smith, lodger, unm, 47, Labourer (Ironwks), Breconshire - Llanifan

(I'm not too familiar with Welsh place names - so forgive any spelling errors)

I can't find this family in Wales in 1851 or 1871 - or any other Ann(e) Jones with father James.

Good luck
Philip
