OAKLEY - 1841 census
« on: Monday 03 April 06 18:33 BST (UK) »
I wonder if someone would be kind enough to look up
James and Esther Oakley both born around 1795 please.  I believe James was born at Ridge and Esther at St Stephen's, St Albans.

In the 1851 census the family were living in the village of Colney street near the Red Cow PH.

I am trying to identify all members of this family.  Grandchildren are identified in the 1851 so I also need to try and identify their parent(s).

Many thanks.
Maureen

Hi Maureen

This looks like them in 1841.  The 41 does not give relationships within households, marital status or exact place of birth.  It only indicates whether or not someone was born in the census county.  Adult ages are often rounded to nearest 5.

HO107/439/4 - 47
Colney Street
St Stephens
St Albans
Herts

All born in Herts

OAKLEY

James, 40, Ag Lab
Esther, 45, Pl. (Plaiter?)
Mary, 20, Pl.
James, 11, Ag Lab
Ann, 10

Rick :)

Hi Maureen,

I assume you have the IGI details for the marriage of James Oakley and Esther Gathan 22 Apr 1816 and the baptisms of their eight children between 1816 and 1830. Also the  baptism of Esther 07 Aug 1791.

If not, I can supply.

Hi Peter

I have the IGI details for the marriage of James and Esther and Esther's baptism details but only have details of four of their children and two grandchildren taken from the 41 & 51 census.

Where did you find the children's baptisms Peter - on IGI?  If so, can you guide me there please?

I also notice that Emanuel was not on the 41 but is on the 51 aged 28 and classed as a Chelsea Pensioner - any ideas why this would be?

Only been researching my tree for 3 months so still have a lot to learn so can I pick your brains please and ask what does "buried by coroners order" mean.  Saw it when researching parish burial records yesterday?

Thank you for all your help.

Regards
Maureen

Hi Maureen,

Re your query on parish burial records, it is the case that where the death is caused by an accident or the deceased has  not been attended by a medical practioner, ie. within 14 days prior to death, it is necessary for the cause of death to be ascertained.  This is done by a Coroner who will investigate the circumstances surrounding the death and then issue an order for cremation or burial.   Hope this helps.

Look out for a PM in due course regarding the IGI.

Hi Peter

Thank you for the info regarding the burial by coroners order:  I can now put on a note against a couple of my ancestors records.

Also Peter, a very, very big thank you for the PM with instructions for accessing the IGI info.  Its absolutely brilliant and so easy to use, will definitely speed up my research -
which I am off to do now ............

Thanks again
Maureen
