The name Alban/Albin/Albion
« on: Tuesday 04 April 06 20:28 BST (UK) »
I have been searching for an Alban J Davies (abt 1911) for some time now, but have been confused by the variation in spelling of the name i.e. Alban, Albin, and even Albion.

I'm sorry if this is a silly question, but do people know if these names are used interchangeably or perhaps they have just been mistranscribed on various documents?

Hi Elsinoe  :)

Do you mean he was born about 1911 ?

Mistranscription or dialect (the transcriber writes what they think they hear) are the usual reasons, but I would have thought that more unlikely if it's 1911 onwards, rather than say 1880 !!!

Hi and thanks for your reply.  On his marriage certificate in 1934 he's listed as Alban Joseph Davies age 24.  The only birth I can find around 1911 is an Albin J. Davies. There is a death for an Albion Davies in 1937 (and we're pretty sure it's him).

Still new at this and easily confused  :-\

Like any hobby, it's time to put your hand in your pocket  :D  But one of the nice things about the era you are talking about in family history is it is recorded, so you can verify his birth, marriage and death with certificates.

I would suggest that (if you are in the UK) you locate the registry offices where those events were recorded and talk to them, they should be able to help you and you should be able to  obtain the certificates which will ensure that you trace back the right line.

If you want clarification, don't hesitate to post  :D
