Still researching this family, and living in hope, that someday, someone else will also be researching this line.

Hi Mary,
John and Annie, had 2 children i am aware of. Their son James was born at 27 Orchard Row, Derry on 15 Jan 1883, they also had son Thomas, though Im not sure when he was born. There was another son I believe to be named John who went to USA.
There were others, I just dont know who they were.

James married Elizabeth Murphy on 27 Dec 1909 at St. Eugene Catholic Cathedral, Londonderry. He was a cobbler and lived at 40 Ferguson Street from 1912 (earliest recording of family at this address) until he died in 1959, his wife survived him by another 3 years, still living at 40 Ferguson Street. James was a bootmaker / cobbler with his own shop.

(You have previously helped me to locate their daughter in laws grave --which the family had been searching literally a life time for --thanks once again)

Thomas (son of John and Annie) married a Catherine Hamilton on 1 Aug 1915 in Templemore Parish ??
They had quite a large family of 8 children, one of whom being James Anthony McGavigan (aka TONY) who i believe currently lives in Derry. Most of his brothers and sisters i believe are still alive and living in  Derry, although most are in nursing homes.  ---- This information I got from Tonys grand daughter Angela McGavigan, although they had no other information to share.

I would love to find out more about John McGaffigan and Annie McNulty, who their other children were, even where John and Annie were buried, I have NO idea when they died, as Irish certificates are not very informative in the way that a scottish marraige cert tells us if the parents of the bride and groom are alive or deceased. I have never seen an Irish census either to locate the family members.

McGaffigan somehow changed to McGavigan and has been recorded as Gavaghan / Gavagan / Gavigan ect, but the one I cant get is how it managed to be mis-transcribed as Maguire .  I try to say McGavigan in my best Derry accent, to see what else i might come up with.

Any help welcome.

Hi Bigfellow
I have also sent you a PM.
The Gaffigan's at 36 Ferguson in 1901 census are DEFINATELY mine  :)
Annie, was my g.g.grandmother. Her son James, was my g.grandfather.
James was indeed a shoemaker, who continued to live at 40 Ferguson Street up until his death in 1959, his wife Elizabeth continuing to live there until she died 3 years later. Aparrently they owned their house in Ferguson Street, as my grandfather went back to Derry to oversee things after his mothers death.
Is there an 1891 or 1911 census to see if Annie's husband John was alive in 1891, or to see if Annie was alive in 1911?

At this moment I cannot place the family living at Bridge Street, but I am certain there must be a connection. I suppose i should search for a Sarah Donaghy marrying a Gavigan circa 1885, but she seems young to have married in that time and to have a 17 year old son, but possibly her age is wrong on the census.

Once again, a huge thanks for this information.
Just goes to show that everyone should keep reposting subjects that they have no success with, and live in hope that someday it will be answered. I originally posted this subject in April 2006, almost 2 years ago!

thanks bigfellow,
regards Gill
