Arthuret: Carruthers 18th Century
« on: Sunday 09 April 06 21:50 BST (UK) »
Hi All,

I think I may have accidently found where my Annan Carruthers are from?

No idea why I haven't done this before, but I had no real reason to stray out of Dumfriesshire before.

Arthuret parish has a significant number of Carruthers in batch C042991 1666 - 1789 and they all have the same names as appear in my tree; Francis, Sarah, Robert, Elizabeth, George,  Margaret, John & James.  Ok they aren't hugely unusual  ;D BUT Francis and Sarah keep appearing.

Names-wise I think this is worthy of investigation.  Does anyone have any connection to Arthuret Carruthers?

My brickwall Francis Carruthers ~ 1744

Hi Pam
Probably wont help, but  here we go

My Family Beaty, & think orginally spelt Baty
worked Fauld Mill farm Arthuret, 50 acres & Corn Millar

But in the census from 1881 There was a James B Curruthers employed on the farm, listed as a nephew, aged 25

His Birthplace was Kirklinton, Cumberland, although researching my tree, i have never gone down the road of nephews etc

My Grand father Walter Beaty married a Catherine McBurnie from Cannonbie.

It is just in case , as the name James crops up
Kind Regards

Hello Pam,

I have just started doing my husband's tree and I have a few Carruthers but I don't know much about them yet..... but I thought I would add these names to the mix  :D

Elizabeth Carruthers  b. abt 1746(Arthuret)  - d. 15 March 1820 married to David Tate of Longtown b. abt 1739 - d. 1805

Mary Carruthers b. abt 1778 married to John Johnston b. abt 1778

Mary Carruthers b. abt 1838 Annan, Scotland married to Philip Johnston b. abt. 1837

All the names I'm investigating are around Longtown, Arthuret, Kirklinton...I found memorial inscriptions on line which was very helpful. However, they have been taken off line as they are going to be published and sold by the local history group....

Bridgets website is very helpful as well.

I do have a public tree on Ancestry.
