John

Just a thought:

Hi Chris,

I have a starting & end point for one of my Wallis family but can not find him in between. He was one of 11 from John & Ann (Austen) Wallis, m 1799,  from Lamberhurst/Ticehurst.

1.Thomas Wallis Ch 1799 Lamberhurst. Died 1872 Ticehurst Workhouse, no info from death cert.

I have checked the 1801, 31, 41, 51 Census for Tice/Lamberhurst without luck so for him so he obviously worked out of the Parish but likely not to far away...unless he was in the army perhaps.

Would it be possible to check the surrounding Parish's for him in 1851 other than Vol 11, 12 & 13 of the C. J. Barnes copilation.

Regards,
John

Looking at the maps of East Sussex & Kent - both Ticehurst and Lamberhurst are on the borders - should we be looking in Kent rather than Sussex for your Thomas Wallis.

Fred Judge started producing local postcards in Hastings in 1904 and became one of the most famous of all the postcard photographers.  A photograph taken in 1904 of “Lightning on Hastings Pier” became an instant best-seller with some 25,000 of the cards bought within the year.  He died in 1950 at 78 years of age but the firm that he founded still survives.

I have a copy of a catalogue:
"The Topographical Guide to Judges Postcards 1906 - 1955", compiled by Ron Grosvenor, Nov 1987, that lists some 26000 pictures broken down into County by County.

Postcard are an excellent source of Local and Family History, and help to put 'Flesh on the Bones' of our Ancestors.

I will search the catalogue if required

1851 Census Hastings, Sussex.  Probably St Clements.

John WILLIS  Fisherman

:-\ Rather vague I know...  He was born before 1815.  He was married but I don't know her name.

Hi there

I will be in the East Sussex Record Office on Thursday 11th March with a group of students instructing them how to use / search the Archives, etc.

I will have some limited time to do other research, providing it is not to difficult to find the correct records.
Parish Registers - i.e. Baptisms, Marriages and Deaths will be the easiest and quickiest as they are all in transcribed books at one end of the Archives.

Hi

Researching the SPICE family of Old Town, Hastings. Know they were in Winding Lane (St. Clements) in 1841.  Are they in your 1831 census information.

A William SPICE was made a Freeman in 1831 (from newspaper originals in Hastings library).  Any further information gratefully received.

Have looked at the 1831 Census for St Clements, Hastings for your William Spice in Winding Street and he is not there
But …
A William Spice, Fisherman is listed in the next street - John Street:

William Spice, Fisherman, 6 males, 9 Females, 2 Families.

In the ‘Hastings Registered Electors 1836-7’ we also have:

Bourne Street, Parish of All Saints
Spice William, Fisherman.
and
John Street, Parish of St Clement
Spice William, Fisherman

So, please be carefull, there are two of them!!!.
