1841/1851 Census Lookup Please = Stewarton

I need a lookup for 1841/51 in Stewarton for :

Samuel Gillespie m Jane/Jean [née Cameron]
ages unknown, married 1827

children : Andrew b 1835 (eldest)

maybe Jean and others - uncertain

Samuel may have been dead by the 1851.

From FreeCen 1841 you have living in New Street, Stewarton:

Samuel, age 34, Carrier, born outside county
Jean, age 39
James, age 11
Jean, age 7
William, age 9
Andrew, age 5
Samuel, age 2
Robert, age 7m

Everybody with the exception of Samuel Snr. born in Ayrshire.

Thanks Monica. That must be them, even though the family always said Andrew was the eldest. Maybe the others died.

such a pity 'outside the county' is not declared!! Maybe I'll have another county to my name...

Hopefully the 1851 census will state where Samuel Snr was born. The 1841 census didn't if the individual was born outside the country where the census was being taken.

there's a slight discrepancy with Jean Jnr's age (7) as she was born in 1836 but I guess that's just a maths error of the time!

County not Country, slip of the finger! The ages are as indexed, hopefully the 1851 census will verify birth years for you.

I can't find them on 1851 FreeCen but it's probably cos not complete.

thanks for Free Cen info I hadn't come across it at all before and have just found another of my families on it in 1841 Edinburgh & gained 3 more kids! Yippee But they're not on subsequent years on Free Cen

There's more coming on-line everyday on Freecen.  I had got tired of searching it and left it alone for a while and now, particularly 1841, is getting quite robust. I have had a few fantastic finds of late on it, which weren't there before.   

If nobody comes through to you on the 1851 census info, you could try the pay to view Scotlands People where the 1851 census came on line recently and includes images of the original census pages.  Not expensive if you know what you are looking for (£6GB for 30 units, 1 unit a search and 5 units to view resulting image of BMD and Census data from 1851 for Censuses and 1855 for BMDs).  There are a number of guides on this site for maximising your use of SP. Have a look at the general Scotland page at the top.
