Plymouth (ever in Cornwall??)
« on: Monday 10 April 06 20:15 BST (UK) »
Sorry if this is a silly question but was Plymouth ever in Cornwall? I have a relative who is included in the 1851 census born in Plymouth but in 1841 he is under Exmouth but not born in County??? Any ideas?

Most definitely not.  Plymouth is on the eastern bank of the river Tamar which forms the boundary between Cornwall and Devon.

Methinks someone was confused, but who that was, I've no idea.

You could start a war saying things like that down there  ;D ;D ;D

It could be that the 'not born county' refers to the Poor Law Union in which he was born. I have relatives like that. Plymouth and Exmouth would be in different Unions although in the same county. The 1841 is a bit ambiguous about what it was collecting for residential status.

Thanks Gadget and sorry if I've offended. I'm from Sussex so far away that I'am unaware of West country history.  :)

Don't worry - it was a joke. I lived there (Plymouth)  for 22 years ;)

I well remember the uproar when places in the east part of Cornwall were given a Plymouth postal code.

Thanks - she was very lovely :)

She liked Plymouth - used to come down for Christmas and sometimes in the summer. (don't tell anyone, but I hated it, ssshhh)
