Hi ,

I'm new to genealogy and computers and would appreciate ANY help.
I'm searching for data on JOHN McCRACKEN born abt. 1844 Scotland . He was a baker, aged 30 , [a widower] when he married Elizabeth GIbben ,daughter of Laurence Gibben
& Margaret McCreadie  05-06-1874, Glasgow.

Thanks

Hi
I had a look on the 1881 British census and searched for John born 1844 + or - 5 years and here are the results.

Name                     Relationship   Year    Birth        Census

MC CRACKEN, John   Head   <1840>   Ayr   Ayr
MC CRACKEN, John   Head   <1843>      Kent
MC CRACKIN, John   Head   <1844>   Irel   Lond
MC CRACKEN, John   Head   <1846>   Irel   Lana
MC CRACKEN, John   Head   <1846>   Irel   Lanc
MC CRACKEN, John   Bro   <1846>   Irel   Renf
MC CRACKIN, Jno.      <1846>   Scot   Angl
MC CRACKEN, John   Head   <1847>   Irel   Lanc
MC CRACKEN, John   Son   <1848>   Ayr   Ayr
MC CRACKEN, John   Head   <1849>   Dumf   Dumf
MC CRACKEN, John B.   Head   <1849>   Ayr   Lana
MC CRAKEN, John   Lodg   <1849>   Ayr   Dumf

I couldn't see one as a baker or living with an Elizabeth though. Do you know when or where he died? It may be worth looking on Scotlands People http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/index.php for more information.

Hi both,

I did exactly the same thing ::)  and looked at all the records,  I looked at all other McCracken (and variations of the name) by requesting Heads of familes only and could not find a likely-looking family.  I also widened the search by expanding the date range,  all to no avail I am afraid.

Many thanks for the prompt reply. I truly appreciate your help.

The marriage cert. for John McCracken & Elizabeth Gibben gives their parents names as John McCracken [master baker] deceased,  & Janet McReady deceased,  Laurence Gibben, ploughman,  & Margaret McReady.

I don't know when or where John McCracken died, only that he was deceased when his son Robert , [born Oct 31st 1885] married  married Helen Loag, daughter of Samuel Loag/Logue & Mary-Ann Muir Murray 10th June 1910 Glasgow.
On Robert's marriage cert. it states his mother's name as Elizabeth Couper formerly McCracken.

Thanks again.

Just found out that John McCracken was first married to Agnes Miller .
From what I can gather she died in childbirth.

This ties in with his marriage cert to Elizabeth Gibbon/Gibben stating he was a widower.
Still can't find out where he was born
