 :P :P Told ya, but no you are right, as soon as you said Sergeant it clicked, but I didn't realise a private soldier could have had one too  :)

You'll probably all shout me down for this, but I understood that a swagger was only used by officers ???

Thanks to you all for your help.
A trip up to London  in the next couple of weeks is required I think to search the archives to see what I can find out . A few to look for.

One of the wifes grandfathers was in the RHA (Royal Horse Artillery I think) At least he was something to do with horses as we have his spurs.
Alfred Hammond(s) no sign of him in the War medals index.  :(

I found this quote on the net;

Probably the best description of the swagger stick's function may be quoted from a British Regimental Sergeant Major instructing new officers. "Now gentlemen, the swagger stick is not for rattling along railings, cleaning out drains at home, or swiping the heads of poor innocent little flowers. Nor is it for poking into stomachs or for fencing duels in the mess line. No, gentlemen, it is to make you walk like officers and above all to keep your hands out of your pockets!.  ;D ;D
