I think everyone has the usual brick wall - or just the unknown person. Leave them for a while (as everyone else said) - they will be back when you least except it!

I think we should have a thread on RC called :-

    Our Brickwalls

We can all list our most frustrating ancestor and when someone else is bored not busy, they can see what they can find. A new approach often works wonders.

I'm looking for my Grandfathers father who's not on his birth cert or his marriage cert.    All the usual places have been searched and we've come up with nothing.

Frustrating isn't exactly the right word . . . . .  think of something a little stronger and you will probably be close   ;)

Re: Ernest Abbott Onley born 1887
« Reply #15 on: Friday 14 April 06 12:30 BST (UK) »
Searching for the father of Ernest Abbott Onley born 10/10/1887 Dec 1/4 V:1b P:372   Mother Louisa Elizabeth Onley. Address: 28 Edinburgh Cottages, Islington.  Occupation: Machinist.

Searches have been made for an affiliation order, but no bastardy records have survived for Clerkenwell (which is the nearest court).  Local newspapers have been searched for court reports with no result on bastardy cases.

According to family (93 year old Aunt)  Ernest came from a well off family with his father being an engineer.   He ran away from home in his early teens and never saw his parents again.

There is a bit of a coincidence with the birth of a Louisa Onley registered Dec 1/4 1887 Islington.  V:1b P: 371 which is the page before Ernest.   Her death is registered Dec 1/4 1887 Islington.  V:1b P: 245   I wonder if it is toooo much of a coincidence!!

There you have it . .   . ..Lady Di, I would willingly take on one of your spare ancestors      :D

Thanks for your help everybody

Hi Barbara,

Sorry, I only have questions - no answers  ::)

Do you have the birth cert for Louisa Onley in 1887?

What parents names are listed there?

Do you think that she may be Ernest's twin?

The Abbott as a second name is raaaather interesting  :-\

Have you found a marriage for Louisa Elizabeth (something) to a (something) Onley?

Have you looked for a birth for Louisa Elizabeth Onley?

Di

This probably won't help but ... I hadn't come across the name of Only before until recently I discovered my 93 year old's (godmother in N.Z.) maiden name was Only, daughter of an Ernest Only and Nellie Kitchen. They came from Bolton which I notice is one of your places albeit not with Only.

She told me that the Onlys were a 'stage family', I think Ernest might have been a stage manager and Nellie, a performer of some sort but I am almost sure that she said the Olny family had been involved with the theatre for generations.

regards,

Lindsay
