Hi Allycat,

Have you had a look on the NAA for your ancestors?  They do have earlier material than 1901 - e.g. Krone's folks came out in the 1850s and they are there.

Bear in mind too, that they may not have gone through the process of naturalisation so there mightn't be a record of that type for them.

It's possible that the people you can't find came into a non-NSW port.  Some of my ancestors came into Brisbane in 1866.  That passenger list was in the Qld office of the National Archives (don't know why!).  You could try the state records offices in NSW, Vic, Qld etc. to see if they have a list which might include any of your folks.  It might be worth getting a copy of the passenger list for the "Daniel Ross", or at least looking at a copy in the state library or state records in Brissie (I'm sure they will have one), in case the missus is on it - I don't know how the unassisted arrivals list was drawn up, but it could well have missed people out.

Cheers
P

Thanks Prue, Yes have been to NAA site, it's excellent actually.  But maybe the wife was a stowaway?  Hehe.  Will keep looking at others you mentioned.  Alison.

Hi Korne, Another Aussie hey?  Thanks for not locking me out of my own posted reply.  ;)  And before you ask, I live near the Croc Hunter's park, and the Glasshouse mountains is just 'up the road'.

How long have you been researching your German ancestry?  I just re-read your original messages again, if your lot ended up in South Australia, I'd highly recommend (if you haven't already done so), joining up with the local genealogical society if for only a year whilst you do your research.  Goto,

http://www.saghs.org.au/

PS I hope you checked out those genforums at genealogy.com, in particular the German page.

Cheers, Allycat.

Hello Allycat, I haven't been to Q, yet. I live on the Fleurieu Peninsula which is just across the water from Kangaroo Island.

I grew up amongst many rellies, some German, and just accepted what I was told. After 50 years I began asking questions, but most branches of the family just seem to stop outside of Australia.

I have been a member of SAGHSoc. for some years, thanks for the suggestion.
Sorry I'm unable to follow through on the Genforums @ Genealogy. I am very involved in local history and spend much of my time in the Land Title Office, Adelaide.
The old records are fascinating.
Hope this all makes sense Regards  Korne

Dear Korne,

Here is the link to the genforums ... very helpful to people worldwide.  I have provided link to the Germany genforum first up.  I hope this works, you have to register for free before you can post messages (just like rootschat), however you should be able to read messages without being a registered user.

http://genforum.genealogy.com/germany/

If you look in the right-hand corner up the top, there is a box that says JUMP TO FORUM ..... in here you can type the surname/s of your choice, just one and it will jump to that forum and you can see all the message listings since say 1999, or chose last 6 months topics etc.

Also it's a good idea to goto the messageboards on rootsweb hosted by ancestry ... link below as I found two forums for Wenzel and Wenzell:-

http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?f=findboard&r=rw&p=surnames&application=public&query=wenzel

Maybe this site will give you some joy, there appears to be a great deal of 'fresh' messages posted.  Perhaps someone will reply to a message you post.  Make sure your heading is clear/concise with locations and years and 'stands out' from the crowd.  Read other people's posted messages that have gotten a response from before you post one of your own.

I haven't actually gotten into Germany yet with surname/s of my ancestors as I think they were changed.  All the birth/death/marriage certificates of my German forbears also state "father's name - not known" and "mother's name - not known" so I've hit a brick wall with all of them.  But someone somewhere knows.

Old records are fascinating, I hope you are not running round with little scribbly notes from all your visits to the Land Titles Office.  It is vital to store your data electronically ... I have found that PAF (Personal Ancestral File) downloadable for free from http://www.familysearch.org is a fantastic tool.

Also, I have found some information passed on by word of mouth down through the generations is not correct and it is up to us to sift through the fact and fiction.

Glad you're a member of SAGs.

Cheerio for now and hope some of my reply was helpful to you, Allycat.

Thanks Allycat, I haven't posted a message as you suggested ---------<http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?f=public&query=wenzelhttp://boards>., can only cope with rootschat at the moment, I did look at all the Wenzels but none were even close.
