1851 census Cumbernauld for GARDNER
« on: Sunday 16 April 06 02:04 BST (UK) »
We are looking for the 1851 census for the Gardner (Gardiner) family of Cumbernauld.  Head of the family was James Gardner.  His wife was Jessie or Janet Gardner (maiden name possibly Russell)  Our great grandmother Marion Laidlaw Gardner was born on 28 November 1845 and at the time of the 1851 census, would have been 6 years old.  We are also trying to find out from the census other members of the family.
ENGLAND: Matthews
SCOTLAND:  Carson, Crawford, Gardner/iner, Howie, Laidlaw,  MacKenzie, Moffatt, Russell, Thomson, Woods

The 1851 index has a James Gardiner wife Jane and amongst others a 6 yr old daughter Marion (born Inverary Argyllshire) but they are living in Bothwell which is almost at the opposite end of the county from Cumbernauld.
The only other 6 yr old Marion doesn't fit with any of your names at all.

James gardiner age 40 born Carnwath
Jane gardiner age 41 born carnwath
Gilbert gardiner age 11 born Carnwath
Jane gardiner age 9 born carnwath
Marion gardiner aged 6 born Inverary
Agnes age 4 born inverary
James age 11 months born Bothwell

The full 1851 census can be viewed online at Scotlands People a pay site.

PS Much of Cumbernauld is in Dunbartonshire rather than Lanarkshire ... although the boundaries have moved several times

Thank you for the effort you have made in searching the 1851 Census.  It is possible that it could be the same family but according to an 1881 Census, Marion was born in Cumbernauld.  On Marion's Death Certificate her mother's maiden name was Jessie Russell Laidlaw but on Marion's Marriage Certificate, her mother's maiden name was  Janet Russell which we have found confusing.

Is there any possibility of confirming the details of Marion's birth on 28 November 1845 ?

Thanking you for your interest

Janet and Jessie were often interchangeable ..

I've ran a quick check on Scotlands People and the only Marion Gardiner they have born in 1845 was in Greenock there are 2 mary gardners born that year but one was in Dunfermline and one in Glasgow

the following are the only ones that appear if you widen the search and use wild cards in the name

1, 06/01/1845   MARGET STRACHAN GARDINER
parents JAMES GARDINER/MARGET RITCHIE
born RATHEN
GROS Ref 235/00 0004
2   06/11/1846   MARGARET GARDNER
parents JAMES GARDNER/JEAN STEVENSON
born   KILMALCOLM
GROS REF 569/00 0002
3   11/05/1844   MARGARET MCAULA GARDNER
parents JAMES GARDNER/ANN BROWN
born   GLASGOW
GROS Ref: 644/01 037
4   01/02/1845   MARY GARDNER   MARY
parents JAMES GARDNER/MARGARET BINNIE
born KIRKINTILLOCH
GROS Ref: 498/00 0004

The previous Marions & Mary's mentioned do not have a father named James

You would need to order the OPR images but they are a mixed bag and often don't contain much more information.

Hello Falkyrn

Received information today regarding the death of Jessie Gardner on 26 May 1881 at Nalleraig (?) Street, Airdrie, widow of James Gardner, Master Joiner.  Her parents were - Alexander Russel, Handloom weaver (dcd) and Marion Laidlaw (dcd).  Information was given to Registrar by their son - James Gardner.    So at least we know that Marion  Laidlaw Gardner had a brother called James.  It was interesting to note that her mother died in Airdrie.

It would be interesting to know what other siblings she had.
