Info about illegitamate children

Just a bit of information I was given this week in Great Canfeld.
I was told that very often if a father of an illegitamate child was not known, the child was given the name of the parish. ie: Dunmow, Easter, Roothing etc.

So this is obviously how these surnames started.  If you are looking for a child and can't find them try looking for the family under the parish they were born in.
