There were quite a number of Mines in and around Holywell in Flintshire many years ago.

You should have a look at this wounderfull site  ::)

The Peak District Mines Historical Society

Quote
contains a complete index of all Mines listed by Her Majesty's Inspectors of Mines in 1896, both Coal and Miscellaneous Mines. The definition of mines worked under the Coal Mines Regulation Act includes coal, ironstone, oil shale and fireclay mines, whilst the definition of mines worked under the Metalliferous Mines Regulation Act includes metalliferous ores, stones and other minerals.

Thanks for your reply, but I was really hoping for mines that were operating in 1855,for this is the year my ggrandfather left Wales for Oz.

There was no mention of Greenfield on the 1896 list,,did this come under another name or had it closed by 1896?

Tassie,,,is still in the dark  :(

Holywell is quite a small delighful place. If you ever come over to the UK, it's worth a visit to see the St Winnifred's Well, to where people used toflock to get a miracle cure of their ills. Anyhow, I've spent some time on Google, and found the following:

A subsidiary company called the Greenfield Copper and Brass Company had a manufacturing base in Flintshire. This company took the copper from the Stanley works and reacted it with calamine in the cementation process to make brass. This was then used to make a wide variety of articles. The manufacturing techniques used are described in the section on the Brass Industry.

Perhaps try too:

This link looks like a direct copy of the secondlink I have in this message, but the picture of Greenfield Brass and Copper works is there:

This list of coal mines does not list coal mines in 1854, so we can presume again that it wasnot a COAL mine:

Hi & thanks for your reply. I have been to some of the sites mentioned.
It is hard for me unless I have a map in front of me to know exactly where a lot of the mines were in relation to Holywell.

I am planning on visting Wales this year in May,but without finding any info on my ggrandfather  &  my rellies,in Wales , seems like a lot of money!  :-\

Cheers

Hi Tassie,
May I suggest you contact NAMHO,The National Association of Mining History Organisations, a great organisation who, I am sure, will have a member able to give you exactly the information you need. I used to be a member of the Grosvenor Caving Club in North Wales and have spent many a happy hour crawling in the mud of the disused mines, ah happy days.

All the best
