pre 1850 trade directories

I am looking for help tracing my g-g grandfather James McBride whose son appears on English census from 1861 and gives his place of birth as Ballybay.

James in on his son's (Henry) wedding cert as a shoemaker and as I have no evidence that James was ever in England I wondered if somebody has access to a trade directory that could give me a few more details.

The family were staunch protestants I don't know if that helps any!!! ???

Hello Jane,

There were two trade directories pre 1850 for Co. Monaghan ..

1824 J. Pigot and Co., City of Dublin and Hibernian Provincial Directory, NLI
1846 Slater, National Commercial Directory of Ireland, NLI

You might need to email the Co. Monaghan Library Headquarters for a look up in one of those directories.
