Hi Gadget!

Date,my guess,1920's.Style,good Amateur.Signature,none.
As mentioned a painting of a horse+jockey is also believed extant somewhere, this one a Grand National winner 1895.
Both have, to my eye, the same style. The Horse in the latter painting being lovingly executed,Jockey less so!
Will attempt attachment, apologie's for any foul up's!

Hi Goggy

Early 20th century in style - I can't see any brush strokes at all. Looks more like a pastel - but I assume it is an oil painting. If it was a professional, I'd say that the style is more 1910-ish. The brush strokes became far more pronounced  and freer later - Sickert, etc - although I expect some 'portrait' painters kept a smoother style. As you say, probably a good amateur but one with a fair amount of training. Maybe they went to Art School but did not need to 'make a living'.

Were there any amateur artists in the family - can you see any signature anywhere - if you blow it up or look with a magnifying glass. Bottom right is the usual place but anywhere on the bottom really. It could, of course have been signed on the back which is no good if it's just a photo of the work. I couldn't see any when I downloaded and blew it up.

Where did they live?

Hi Gadget!
Info on this family very sparse, twixt Liverpool+Waterford all is myth+legend! There are none of the above that I've heard of,plenty other's tho'.

I have 'louped' for brush mark's,concur with you, signature MAY be on the back of the original,my copy came ex U.S.A so will enquire there for 'writing on the back' altho' I think this would have been foreseen.Worth a try.

As mentioned the (hopefully) attached copy of Horse+Jockey show's similar aptitude, but horse seem's to have been the main object.

To my eye it look's anatomically correct,to any horse owner, maybe not!

This maybe the work of a family member that was a Horse Keeper,1920's,post WW1,prior to War service.G'G'Ma also done pre 1914?

Ihave a little more to explain re Horse Keeper but too lengthy here,as mentioned,Myth+Legend!

Thank you for your help and observation's.

It would have been nice to see the horse, goggy  ;D

If it was the Grand National winner, then it is probably a Liverpool location but, there again, the Irish are/were fond of their racing  :-\
