Family Tree 4 - help please!
« on: Sunday 23 April 06 13:51 BST (UK) »
Yesterday I put my data into my large family tree on Family Tree 4.  Today I went to open it up again and the icon was still there but it was empty.  The tree had gone!! :'(

Thankfully I do have a copy of my tree on my website although sadly 5 months out of date, knew I should have done a back up yesterday.

Imported a copy of the GEDCOM from there back to Family Tree 4 and it was back again.  Closed the computer down and went downstairs to watch marathon.

When I came back the same had happened again, it is gone.

I decided to uninstall Family Tree 4 and start again.  I am trying to reinstall but I just get an error message saying

There was an unexpected error accessing the application you have selected

Does anybody have any ideas what this might mean and how I can reload Family Tree 4 back on.

Thank you

Kerry

Hi Kerry

It sounds as though you have managed to develop a corrupted Pathway for the FTM programme.
Family Tree Maker builds and maintains a few unseen data files and backups. Before you attempt to re-install it would be best to clear all of the files from the previous installation so that there are no broken pathways and disconnected files on your PC.
If you open up the C: drive (your hard drive usually is C: unless you keep your program files on a second hard drive).
Usually there is a folder called Program files. Find the FTM folder  which should be in there. Highlight it then right click on it . There may be an option shown to 'uninstall'
Left click on this.

OR

Click on 'Start'
Open up 'Control Panel'
Open up 'Add or Remove'
Locate the FTM folder
Click on the Remove button.

The second way is easiest but might not find all the back-up FTM files.
It is better to use the 'Uninstall' facility built-in to most programs.

Once the old program is wiped out try a fresh install from your disc
There is a possibility your disc may be corrupted.

Hope this works. Best of luck!

Hi Russell

Thank your for your answer.  I sorted it out on Monday in the end, by doing exactly what you said and it seems to have worked.  I spent Monday putting the additional data in, and yes, I saved it.  Tuesday it was still there!!!

Thanks again

Kerry ;D ;D ;D ;D

Hi Kerry

Its so satisfying when you work out solutions yourself :)  :)

It put you in control of that frustrating machine rather than the other way round   :P  :P

For all its limitations FTM is a useful programme.

Glad you didn't lose anything other than the last couple of weeks work.
